Introduction

The fifty-fourth Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was a black regiment formed in the north during the Civil War. The 54th was formed from the free black population in the north, and consisted of Frederick Douglass' sons, who were very instrumental in helping develop the regiment. Soldiers in the 54th were given a chance to show that they were equal, compared to white regiments, in the aspect of strength as soldiers and citizens. The consistent courage and sacrifice of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment showed the rest of the Union army that black soldiers were equals, in reference to fighting ability, and that they "earned undying battlefield glory."
